How To Rediscover Your Style of Fashion

Fashion is a lot of fun for me. I enjoy the process of mixing colors and selecting the best hues that go well with my skin tone. I also do not mind putting on clothes and selecting the kinds that are best tailored to my body type.

I enjoy following the newest trends in fashion, but only to a certain degree. A lot of the time, it comes down to the style, colors, and/or shades of color, the materials used, and the sizes that are offered.

So... What Exactly Is Fashion?

When I think about fashion, I define it as the deliberate act of combining clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, footwear and accessories to achieve a specific look. According to the authors of this article “Fashion”,  fashion can be described as

a term used interchangeably to describe the creation of clothing, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, and jewellery of different cultural aesthetics and their mix and match into outfits that depict distinctive ways of dressing (styles and trends) as signifiers of social status, self-expression, and group belonging. As a multifaceted term, fashion describes an industry, styles, aesthetics, and trends (para. 1).

Just in case the first definition is not suitable for you. I have also included these definitions from Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary. Fashion can also be defined as

(1): the prevailing style (as in dress) during a particular time (Fashion, n.d).

(2): a garment in such a style (Fashion, n.d)

In a nutshell, I believe that fashion is the act of matching clothing (by colors and or styles), adding accessories, jewelry, footwear and hairstyles to achieve the overall style that one desires.

How To Rediscover Your Style of Fashion

In my opinion, when it comes to rediscovering your own sense of style, I think it is important to remain true to your own style while keeping up with the latest trends.

Being that there are so many styles available, I can see how easily it can be to become overwhelmed by them. Sometimes in the midst of browsing around from one style to another, you may forget what truly works for you and reveals the uniqueness of your own style.

Here are  some guidelines to assist you in rediscovering your own sense of style:

Step 1: Fully Explore Your Closet

Consider The Clothes You Already Have: Before you decide to get rid of anything, take a real good look at what is presently in your closet. Which pieces are your favorites? Think about the clothes you like to wear the most. Are they presenting the best image of you? Think about the items that make you feel the most comfortable when you wear them. Are they complimenting your skin tone as well as your body type? Consider the pieces that give you the feeling of confidence when you are wearing them. Are they the styles you feel connected to?

It's okay to go with the latest trends in fashion as long as the styles meet your needs. If you want comfort as well as the latest styles, you just want to make sure that the latest style of clothing compliments you. This would include the chosen shades of colors and the way each piece of clothing fits you. If you are not sure of how your clothing is fitting you, just take a look in a full length mirror and see if your clothes are fitting you the way you need them to.

Step 2: Determine What You Like And Dislike

Try On A Variety of Outfits: One of the best to rediscover your own sense of style is by experimenting with different looks. You can also take out those pieces you have not worn in awhile or would not normally wear and see how they look on you. Just by doing this you will be able to see what is complimenting and what is not. This is a great method for determining which items you like and want to keep, as well as for creating and maintaining the looks and styles that are perfectly suited for you.

Step 3: Get Inspired

Examine The Styles of Others: Many people have their own style icons that they admire and look to for inspiration. They can be a celebrity or a friend, take a look at the styles they’re wearing and see if any of them catch appeal to you. This is one of the best ways to gain a better understanding of what kind of fashion looks and styles you’re drawn to.

Step 4: Save And Collect Pieces That Define Your Stylish Taste

Check Out Fashion Blogs and Fashion Magazines: You can stay up to date with the latest fashion trends by following fashion blogs and magazines. Not only will you be able to know about the newest trends, you will also have a better understanding of what’s in and what’s out.

In my opinion, I feel that when it comes to the latest fashion trends, that should not be the only deciding factor to determine if the chosen styles should be worn. The most important factors that one should consider, should be one's skin tone, body shape and the fit (how the clothing fits when it's worn) of the clothing. I also feel that if the latest fashion trends can meet those previously mentioned factors, then that is a win/win for me.

Step 5: Have Fun Creating Your Outfits

Go Shopping With Close Friends: When you shop with friends, not only be a lot of fun, you can give and receive some honest feedback when each of you are trying on clothes. By doing this each of you will gain a better perspective on what looks good and, what doesn’t look good on each of you.

Step 6: Smart Shopping Always Works

  • Make A List: Before you go shopping, it’s a good idea to write down a list of the items you intend to buy. This will help you stay on track and not buy on impulse.
  • Stay Within Your Budget: While you are shopping, pay attention to the cost of each item. This will help you stay within the limits you have previously set for spending.
  • Quality Matters: Pay attention to the quality of the items you want to buy. Will the item be easily torn? Is the stitching strong or is it coming apart at the seams? Are the items cheaply made? You want to know all of this before you buy.
If you are not sure, you can always look on the inside of the item and find the tags. They can tell you the size of the items and what material the items are made of.
  • Take Advantage of Discounts: There is nothing wrong with getting quality items for a cheaper price, just as long as they are the items you want and are made very well.

Many times I have found very nice pieces at discounted prices. Not only was I very happy with the purchases I made, I saved money in the process.

The only way to truly know how something is made is to actually look at it and see, but a lower price does not always translate into the worst quality or out-of-style pieces. It can also be a chance to find those timeless items that never go out of style.

The rediscovery of your style of fashion can be such a fun process especially when you are shopping and, it's one of the best ways to express yourself. If you keep these tips in the back of your mind you will be on your way to finding your own sense of style.

Until next time, Enjoy Living and loving Life.
